Curb appeal and the all-important first impression are front and center when it comes to the unparalleled craftmanship artisan Michael Healy brings to the design of his artful door knockers. “The front door is certainly a focal point of your home,” says Michael, who’s been manufacturing his product line for almost 30 years. “It doesn’t take much to make over your entrance and give it a fresh new look—a fresh coat of paint and new hardware can make a world of difference.”
As an avid boater who grew up on Cape Cod, Michael’s initial designs boast heavy nautical influence for a collection that now includes a range of coastal-inspired designs—from seahorses and scallops to anchors and Nantucket baskets. Over time, his offerings have expanded to include the popular bumblebee design as well as Michael’s personal favorite: the steer skull. “As I continue to retire designs and release new designs each year, I want to keep up with the newest trends, and I always love to hear ideas from our customers,” he says.
Using a sand casting technique he learned while studying metal sculpting at the University of Notre Dame, Michael begins the process with a sketch that is then sculpted in a three-dimensional model. The model is used to make an impression in fine sand, which is filled with metal heated to 2,300 degrees. “Each mold can be used only once, making each piece truly unique,” he notes. Once the metal cools, the sand is broken away, and multiple phases of grinding and polishing take place before each door knocker is given a polyurethane finish to ensure years of protection. Michael’s signature serves as the final touch, confirming each piece’s authenticity.
No detail proves to be too small for Michael when it comes to maintaining a stylish approach to functionality—especially with the launch of his newest collection, video doorbell covers. “They are the first of their kind and a perfect way to elevate your home security,” says Michael. With a variety of styles that make a striking statement, Michael Healy Designs takes hospitality to a new level.
